Frequently asked questions

BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, so files easily run into tens of megabytes. JPG uses lossy compression that drops detail you can't really see, so photos often end up a fraction of the original size.

image cat encodes at high quality by default, so for photos and screenshots the difference is hard to spot. You'd only notice slight artifacts when zooming in heavily.
